So someone want to tell me why this cover has Corndogs on the Cover?
This is my first five-star read of 2019 and I’m shocked that it is this one. This book has been on my radar for YEARS now and thankfully I got to it because wow I’m obsessed. I’ve heard so many differing opinions about this series and was totally terrified to get into these in fear of hating them because most of my friends are on the loving side for these books. I did Buddy Read this first book with Mels and Amy! We are shooting to finish the whole series before King of Scars and I think we are totally going to do it!
I did do a vlog for my reading experience on my Channel which will be posted later on today but here is the link to my Channel if you’re interested! It’s really just me saying how much I love these boys: VLOG.
The main character of this story is Neil Josten, a troubled boy who has a rough childhood but invests his life in a game called Exy. Exy is supposedly similar to Lacrosse which I know nothing about so really I just knew nothing going into this book. And there isn’t a lot for plot, it’s mainly about this cast of boys that Neil ends up meeting as he signs a contract with a College Exy Team. Neil then meets the Palmetto State Foxes, a group of humans who have had a troubled life and it also serves as a kind of halfway house. You meet all these people and yeah some of them are terrible, but you get to know them and I love them all.
There is also an underlying plot line on gangs and murderers, so that was unexpected but a very important part of the storyline!
Now there isn’t a lot of plot, so really there isn’t hardly ANYTHING to review besides triggers and being careful while reading these books.
I would die for Neil Josten. I would die for Nicky. And if I’m being completely honest, I’d die for the whole Fox team. They are all developed so well, I was shocked by how amazing the character development is. The other sort of Main Character, Andrew, I despised in the beginning but wow I completely loved him by the end of the book. And then KEVIN. Wooo love Kevin with my whole heart. This is just going to be me saying I love all these boys, over and over and over again.
~ The Foxes ~
Neil: Has a rough life, very secretive and likes to keep to himself. The love of my life. I’d die for him and he just needs a good tight hug.
Andrew: A complete asshole with a drug problem and who loves to drink. He’s terrible and rude but also has a troubled past that I can’t wait to read about further on.
Aaron: Andrew’s boring twin. Why is he even here?
Nicky: The beautiful gay boy we love, loves his team and loves Neil.
Kevin: The superstar of the Foxes, really needs a hug and I love him tons.
There are a lot of triggers in this book. Like … a lot. I’m going to try to list them all. Below are some of the spoilers for exactly what some of these triggers are!
- Drug Abuse
- Abuse – Verbal, Physical, Domestic, Parental
- Homophobic Slurs
- Ableist Slurs
- Over Dosing
- Non Consensual Kissing
- Body Scars and Mutilation
- Parental Death
- The List is Finally Over
Now time for Minor Spoilers for Y’all who are hesitant about this book and don’t really know what you’re getting into.
Really if you want to know what kind of slurs are used, then the word Faggot is used as well as Retarded. Both disgusting words and they are, of course, used as insults. And there is a scene in the end where a guy overdoses on drugs and dies. I wasn’t expecting that at all but it happens. And there’s not a lot of shocking moments in this besides the use of those words and the overdose at the end.
I really didn’t want to get into who dies, and just the dynamics of the boys but it’s rough just know that. It’s a rough group of boys but they own my heart.
I am obsessed with this book, and I seriously am so excited to start book two!
I hope y’all are having a great day/night and Happy Reading friends!
